Chipotle prank influencer pleads guilty

Dead Star Proves Empty Space Isn't Empty
A city-sized magnetar 13,000 light-years away, spinning every 2.1 seconds, has given the strongest evidence yet for a 1936 prediction by Heisenberg and Euler: empty space is not empty. AI Maps Six Hidden Earth Structures
About 1,800 miles beneath your feet, Earth's mantle meets the liquid outer core. Chinese Academy of Sciences researchers trained a deep-learning system on more than two million earthquake recordings from 1990 to 2024, then hand-corrected the model's mistakes. It pulled out 174,929 faint PKP precursor signals—more than ten times all earlier catalogs—waves that scatter off lumps near the core-mantle boundary and arrive just before stronger waves. The new map shows patches once thought isolated actually join into larger belts. Six poorly sampled zones, labeled B1 to B6, including high-latitude Eurasia, Central Asia, and the South Atlantic, now look like major hidden heterogeneities. The team thinks they may be thermochemical piles: leftover subducted slabs, partial melt, mineral transitions, or leftovers from the object that made the Moon, interacting with giant low-shear-velocity blobs. Those deep structures can steer mantle flow, magma, volcanoes, and even the magnetic field. The study is in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth.

A central North Carolina teenager is critically ill with Naegleria fowleri, the rare 'brain-eating' amoeba, as scientists track a northward shift in where people get exposed. Officials cannot pin one case on climate. They can say a heat-loving killer now has more water, more months, and more latitude.

Astronomers Find a Galaxy Without Stars
Cloud-9, 14 million light-years away near Messier 94, looks like a galaxy that never switched on. Radio telescopes first found a compact, nearly spherical cloud of about a million solar masses of hydrogen. Hubble saw almost no starlight in January. Now Ignacio Trujillo's team used HiPERCAM on the Gran Telescopio Canarias, the world's largest optical telescope, to take images about ten times deeper than before. In 2.36 hours they found zero stellar emission and set an upper limit of just 16,000 solar masses of stars even if the population is old and metal-poor. 'Most objects in the universe leave some trace of light. Cloud-9 does not,' Trujillo told Space.com. Theory says ultraviolet light after reionization can keep gas in low-mass dark-matter halos too hot to collapse into stars. The object sits in that sweet spot: enough mass to hold gas, not enough to ignite. The jury is still out pending deeper space imaging, but Cloud-9 is the best failed-galaxy candidate yet.

Apple Jacks Up Streaming Prices Again
Apple raised U.S. Apple TV by $2 a month to $15, and lifted the annual plan 20 percent from $99 to $119, Ars Technica reported, citing Variety. New sign-ups pay immediately; existing customers get about a month’s notice. Apple also lifted Apple One Individual from $20 to $22, tracking last month’s Apple Music hike from $11 to $13. Family and Premier Apple One tiers were already raised in July, to $28 and $40. This is the fourth U.S. hike since Apple TV+ launched in 2019 at about $5 a month; the monthly price has now tripled after jumps in 2022, 2023 and August 2025. Apple still undercuts ad-free Netflix (about $20) and Disney+ (about $19), but with a thinner library. Services were 28.1 percent of June-quarter revenue with far fatter margins than hardware. The Information reported in 2025 that Apple TV was the only unprofitable Apple service, losing more than $1 billion a year and not expected to break even for a decade.

Keto Beats Mediterranean for Liver Fat
A randomized trial in Cell Metabolism gave all meals to 42 adults with obesity, prediabetes, and fatty liver and forced similar weight loss, about 10 percent, on keto, Mediterranean, or a low-fat plant-forward diet. Adherence topped 95 percent. Muscle insulin sensitivity rose about 50 percent on every plan, but keto pulled ahead on the liver. Liver fat fell 67 percent on keto versus about 45 percent on the other two. Hepatic insulin sensitivity improved two to three times more. Half the keto group no longer met prediabetes criteria after four to five months, versus 29 percent on Mediterranean and 7 percent on the plant-forward diet. Keto also drove the biggest drop in insulin and the biggest rise in glucagon, a hormone that helps the liver burn fat. LDL and apoB did not worsen despite the high fat load. The trial was small and short. It does not crown keto as the healthiest diet. It says that for this metabolic cluster, cutting carbs did more than the scale alone.
