Gum Sweetener Linked to Heart Attacks
Xylitol, the sugar alcohol in gum, toothpaste, jam, yogurt, and ice cream, is being added at doses about 1,000 times what appears in nature. At the European Society of Cardiology congress in Munich, Berlin cardiologist Marco Witkowski reported the largest look yet: 17,710 people, top versus bottom blood-level quartile. The highest xylitol group was 57 percent more likely to die or have a heart attack or stroke within six years, and still 18 percent more likely after 30 years. Risk rose with dose and held after age, sex, BMI, hypertension, diabetes, and lipids. Earlier work showed xylitol makes platelets more eager to clot. Artificial sweeteners are sold as the healthy swap and rated safe by regulators; Witkowski said the long-term heart data say we barely know. An ESC reviewer and the British Heart Foundation called it observational, not proof of cause, and not a green light for more sugar. It is a red flag on ultra-processed 'sugar-free' foods as xylitol use climbs.

Judge Voids Pentagon Ban on Anthropic
U.S. District Judge Rita Lin ruled Thursday night that the Pentagon’s attempt to brand Anthropic a “supply chain risk” was illegal, punishing the lab for criticizing Defense Department views on military AI. The government is expected to appeal. A narrower D.C. Circuit case on a different procurement statute is still pending. Anthropic welcomed the ruling; the White House did not immediately comment.

NASA's Hubble Rival Launches Sunday
NASA's $4.3 billion Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is due off Kennedy Space Center pad 39A at 7:26 a.m. ET Sunday, Aug. 30 (4:26 a.m. PT) on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy, nine months early after surviving repeated White House cancellation attempts. Its 2.4-meter primary mirror, the same size as Hubble's, was donated by the National Reconnaissance Office from a canceled spy-satellite program and refigured for deep-space infrared work. A 300-megapixel camera will scan the sky about 1,000 times faster than Hubble; one full image would fill a half-million 4K TVs. From Earth-sun L2, Roman will census a billion galaxies, hunt dark energy and the Hubble Tension, and use microlensing to find tens of thousands of exoplanets. A coronagraph aims to see Jupiter-class worlds 100 million times fainter than their stars. Project scientist Julie McEnery said the surveys may show the standard cosmological model is wrong. Weather for Sunday is only about 50 percent favorable; Monday is the backup.

Belichick Silences Critics With Dublin Upset

GTA 6 Crashes Twitch and Netflix
Rockstar’s first GTA 6 gameplay drop, a Netflix-exclusive Extended Look, peaked at 3,970,738 concurrent viewers across livestream platforms, the biggest gaming stream of 2026, according to Streams Charts data cited by Eurogamer. About 9,038 streamers covered it, logging 5.23 million hours watched and beating Summer Game Fest’s 3.81 million peak. Twitch took about 44 percent of hours, YouTube 35 percent, Kick 20 percent. Spanish streamer IlloJuan led with 233,520 peak viewers, ahead of Rubius and IShowSpeed. Demand knocked both Netflix and Twitch around: some viewers were locked out 40–50 minutes. Cloudflare said Netflix’s global traffic jumped 16 percent (45 percent in the UK); Twitch peaked 35 percent above baseline; Rockstar’s site spiked 172 percent worldwide and 1,210 percent in the UK. Sensor Tower told IGN U.S. Netflix web visitors soared 125 percent versus a typical Thursday. Chat was more sour about the outages than the game. GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Tim Cook's Apple Era Ends Tuesday
Tim Cook steps down as Apple CEO on Tuesday, Sept. 1, ending a 15-year run that began when Steve Jobs resigned in August 2011. OpenAI Cuts Cursor After Musk Deal
OpenAI said Friday it will stop supplying its models to Cursor after SpaceX closed a $60 billion acquisition of the AI coding startup on Aug. 14. The proposed cutoff is Nov. 12, 2026, and OpenAI said it will not give Cursor future models. The lab wrote it "cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our experience with Elon Musk's companies violating contracts." Cursor CEO Michael Truell said OpenAI models are about 5% of Cursor traffic and that the companies are talking, calling OpenAI "neutral infrastructure" Cursor has used for years. Musk posted Saturday, "I couldn't care less," then called Sam Altman and Greg Brockman untrustworthy and repeated his claim they "stole" a nonprofit. Anthropic, which rents compute from SpaceX, said it will increase Claude support in Cursor, drawing jabs over Anthropic's earlier Windsurf cutoff. The feud sits on Musk's lost 2024 lawsuit over OpenAI's for-profit conversion.

Memory Chips Now Rival Gold Prices
South Korea's Trade Statistics Promotion Institute says DRAM export prices for chips, not modules, averaged $92,183 per kilogram from Aug. 1 to 20, up 401% year over year and 12.5 times the January 2023 low after ChatGPT launched. That kilogram of Korean DRAM is worth about as much as 620 grams of 24-karat gold, 1.53 times platinum, and 41.7 times silver. Export value in the same window jumped 505% to $9.81 billion. AI data-center demand for high-bandwidth memory is starving conventional DRAM. Goldman Sachs sees a 5% shortage this year widening to 5.9% next, possibly into 2028. Micron said average DRAM selling prices rose more than 60% quarter on quarter in its fiscal third quarter of 2026. Apple has already raised product prices and is lobbying Washington to buy Chinese CXMT chips. Reports say NVIDIA Rubin GPU servers could cost 15 to 17% more, with memory a large slice of the bill. Shark Graveyard Found in Egyptian Desert
Paleontologists led by Cairo University's Tarek Yassin pulled 14 fossil shark teeth from phosphate beds on Egypt's Abu-Tartur Plateau, a stretch of Western Desert that was a shallow inland sea about 80 million years ago. The teeth, some needle-like, others broad and serrated, belong to at least five extinct lamniform species new to the site, bringing the local total to seven. Two species had never been reported in Egypt; an ancient goblin-shark relative, Scapanorhynchus raphiodon, may be the first known from Africa and possibly the youngest specimen of its kind. Shark skeletons are cartilage, so teeth are the record. Crow sharks hint at nearshore waters; goblin-shark kin hint at deeper shelf and slope, so the 'graveyard' is a mixed, nutrient-rich Tethys margin, not one pile of animals that died together. The sea later retreated as levels fell and tectonics shut Egypt's link to the Tethys, leaving seafloor as desert. The paper is in Cretaceous Research.
