Rays clinch AL East with 6-1 win over Yankees

The Tampa Bay Rays captured the American League East title Tuesday by beating the New York Yankees 6-1 in the second game of a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium, according to reporting by si.com.

Tampa Bay began the day needing one victory from the four-game series to secure the division. The Rays first missed that opportunity, falling 2-0 in the opener, but recovered in the nightcap to reach 96 wins and seal their fifth division championship in franchise history.

The result also settled the season-long tiebreaker in Tampa Bay’s favor. Because of that, one victory was enough to eliminate the team’s entire remaining magic number for the division.

Yankees take the opener

The first game offered little encouragement for Tampa Bay’s offense. The Rays were held scoreless as New York’s Carlos Rodon worked three shutout innings before David Bednar took over to finish the 2-0 victory.

Cody Bellinger supplied all of the Yankees’ offense with a two-run home run. Tampa Bay was unable to produce a response, leaving the Rays with one more chance on the day to complete the division-clinching mission.

That chance arrived in the nightcap, where Tampa Bay’s pitching and opportunistic offense produced a very different result.

Rasmussen leads a dominant start

Drew Rasmussen delivered one of the strongest outings of his career, carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning and striking out 11 Yankees. His performance kept New York from building momentum while the Rays gradually assembled their lead.

Tampa Bay opened the scoring in the third inning. Taylor Walls reached second base, and Ryan Vilade grounded out to second, allowing Walls to cross the plate. The run came without a big hit, reflecting the approach that shaped the rest of the game.

The Rays added three runs in the seventh. Walls again played a central role, using a safety squeeze to bring Chandler Simpson home. The Yankees failed to cover first base on the play, allowing Walls to reach safely while Simpson scored without a throw.

Two batters later, Yandy Diaz lined a single into the gap in left-center. Ben Williamson scored, and Walls followed, sliding headfirst to narrowly beat catcher Austin Wells’ tag. The sequence gave Tampa Bay a 4-0 advantage.

New York answered in the bottom half of the inning. George Lombard singled home a run, although the score was charged to Rasmussen after Kevin Kelly surrendered the hit. Rasmussen’s no-hit bid had ended earlier in the inning, but his overall performance remained the foundation of Tampa Bay’s victory.

Small ball seals the title

The Rays did not rely on a barrage of extra-base hits. They produced only two during the nightcap, yet still scored six runs by combining productive outs, bunting, aggressive baserunning and timely singles.

That style was particularly visible in Walls’ squeeze play and the defensive lapse that accompanied it. Tampa Bay created pressure without needing to string together several hard-hit balls, while its pitching prevented the Yankees from turning the game into a contest.

Diaz added the final flourish in the ninth inning with a two-run single, breaking out of a slump and extending the lead to 6-1. The hit completed an all-around performance that allowed the Rays to celebrate their division title after the second game of the day.

The championship adds another milestone to Tampa Bay’s history and confirms the club’s place atop the AL East after a 96-win regular season. The Rays’ victory also demonstrated the varied ways they can score: a groundout began the night’s offense, a squeeze bunt expanded the lead, and Diaz’s late single provided the decisive finishing touch.
