Shimla : Himachal Congress today accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of not restraining his partymen whose speeches were creating 'communal divide' in the country.

Reacting to today's speech of the Prime Minister at 'Run for Unity' to mark Sardar Patel's 140th birth anniversary, which is being celebrated as 'National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas)', HPCC state Spokesperson Deepak Sharma said, ''Prime Minister will not get anything from his 'Run for Unity' but should rather 'Work for Unity'.

In an apparent reference to BJP national president Amit Shah, Sharma said the Prime Minister should restrain his party leaders from making divisive and inflammatory statements.

He said the BJP's main agenda was to spread communal tension and gain electoral benefits.

On the Prime Minister honouring Sardar Patel, the Congress sate spokesperson said Mr Modi cannot deny the historical fact that Sardar Patel was the country's Home Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and above all leader of the Indian National Congress and this only showed he was 'desperate to borrow country's icons who led the freedom struggle'.

The Party spokesperson said Modi was repeatedly ''belittling the highest post of the Prime Minister by his words and actions'' and hoped that he would conduct himself in such a manner that would enhance the dignity of the office.

Earlier in his speech, Modi made a veiled attack on the grand old party saying, nepotism and dynasty worship had vitiated the country's politics and pointed out Sardar Patel never promoted his dynasty and no family names were ever linked to his political legacy.

Modi also accused the successive Congress governments of belittling the contribution of Sardar Patel in bringing all states under the Union of India in the aftermath of partition.
