New Delhi : The Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday took a ride in Delhi Metro and inaugurated a line connecting Badarpur here and Faridabad in Haryana. He took the ride between Janpath and Bata Chowk stations.

Union Minister for Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister for Rural Development Birender Singh, Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal received Modi at the Bata Chowk Metro station.

The prime minister also interacted with passengers on the metro, allowing some of them to take selfies with him. Modi was slated to address a public meeting after inaugurating the metro corridor.

The Rs.2,900 crore project, an extension of the violet line between the ITO and Badarpur Metro stations, will have nine stations – Sarai, NHPC Chowk, Mewala Maharajpur, Sector 28, Badkal Mor, Old Faridabad, Neelam Chowk Ajronda, Bata Chowk and Escorts Mujesar.

About 1.95 lakh passengers are expected to use the new corridor every day by the year-end. The 13.87 km Delhi (Badarpur)-Faridabad (Escorts Mujesar) Metro corridor is equipped with solar power generation facilities in all stations and depots.

The new metro line will be open for public from 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Union Ministers Venkaiah Naidu, Virender Singh, Rao Inderjet Singh and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) chief Mangu Singh accompanied the Prime Minister.

The launch of the section would allow hassle-free travel for around two lakh daily commuters between the national capital and the industrial hub in Haryana.

The long-awaited 14-km long extension will have nine stations from Sarai to Escorts Mujesar. Two more stations, NCB Colony and Ballabgarh, will be added by 2017, Metro officials said.
