Shimla : With the fresh registration of a preliminary inquiry by the CBI against Himachal Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, pressure has started building once again on the octogenarian leader to quit.

A battery of former Cabinet Ministers and senior leaders, including Gulab Singh Thakur, a former Congress Minister and Vidhan Sabha Speaker, BJP leaders Ravinder Singh Ravi, Rajiv Bindal and Narendra Bragta have demanded that the Chief Minister quit to facilitate an impartial inquiry into the corruption allegations against him.

The BJP leaders expressed surprise that Singh was now holding former Chief Minister and their leader Prem Kumar Dhumal and his family responsible for the registration of the case. Singh’s income from his orchards, by his own admission, had gone up from a few lakhs to crores of rupees when he was Union Steel Minister.

The Himachal The Central Bureau of Investigation recently  initiated an inquiry against Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and his family members for allegedly amassing wealth of Rs 6.1 crore disproportionate to the known sources of income while serving as Union Minister of Steel.

CBI sources said the preliminary inquiry is against Singh, his wife Pratibha Singh, son Vikramaditya Singh, daughter Aparajita Singh and an LIC agent Anand Chauhan.

The PE will probe with a disproportionate assets perspective the alleged unexplained income of Rs 6.1 crore during the period 2009-11 when he was serving as the Minister of Steel in the UPA Government, the sources said.

They said it is alleged that Singh while serving as the Union Minister has invested Rs 6.1 crore in life insurance policies in his and his family members’ names through LIC agent Chauhan.

They said PE is the first step to examine the veracity of a complaint or source information received by the agency and if prima facie allegations are found true further probe is carried out by converting it as FIR also known as regular case. Party questioned the role of the Chief Minister and announced withdrawal of support to the government.
