New Delhi : The Congress Party on Monday demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the matter of remarks on Sonia Gandhi by Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Giriraj Singh.

The opposition had earlier demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologise for Singh's comment and had demanded that the minister resign, forcing an adjournment in the Lok Sabha soon after the budget session resumed. While, the Union minister Giriraj Singh said that, "I never meant to offend, if my comments hurt anyone's sentiments, I regret it."

"Congress is demanding an unqualified apology from the government, especially from the Prime Minister, because this is not the first time. This is in continuation of his earlier statements, which are very offensive," said Congress leader Rita Bahuguna Joshi.

Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said BJP MPs and ministers have continuously been making unwarranted and irresponsible statements. Such remarks create fissures in the society and hurt the harmony, he said. At one point of time, Kharge got offended when his mike was switched off. "Whenever I speak, the mike is switched off...I have to protest," he said.

The Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises had earlier faced wide spread condemnation for asking if the Congress Party would have accepted Sonia Gandhi had she not been white-skinned.

"If Rajiv Gandhi had married a Nigerian or if she (Sonia) wasn't white skinned, would Congress accept her as a leader?" the BJP MP from Bihar had told his supporters during a meeting in Hajipur.
