5.6 magnitude earthquake hits Assam, tremors felt in Bangladesh, Nepal & eastern India

New Delhi : An earthquake of 5.6 magnitude on the Richter Scale, hit Assam at 6:40 am on Sunday morning and the tremors were reportedly felt in Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan as well as eastern India. The epicentre of the earthquake is reported to be near Basugaon area of Assam.

No casualties have been reported in the incident so far. The Indian Meteorological Department informed that no damage has been done since the quake was of moderate intensity.

Officials said that, “The epicentre of the earthquake is reported to be in 23km north of Basugaon in Assam. The epicentre was located near Kokrajhar at a depth of 10 kilometers, on latitude 26.5 degree north and longitude 90.1 degree east.”

Earthquakes in these areas of North-East are usual because of high vulnerable areas for the earthquake, no casualty has been reported so far.

Officials at the Regional Seismological Centre here said the tremor, with its epicentre in Assam's Kokrajhar district, was also felt in other North-Eastern states. Assam and all states in the North East are categorized under Zone-V in the country's Seismological Map, they said.

Police said that about this earthquake in Assam, “The quake rattled doors and windows forcing people to rush out of their houses”. In April this year, tremors had been felt at Guwahati and its neighbouring areas in Assam following the devastating tremor in Nepal.
